What started in 2006 as a 34-rider ride through the Flint Hills — then called Dirty Kanza — is now the race every other gravel event gets compared to, drawing close to 5,000 riders to Emporia every Memorial Day weekend. Life Time now owns and operates it as the marquee stop of the Life Time Grand Prix, but the event has held onto its grassroots identity even as it's scaled: brutal and unpredictable terrain (mud, heat, or both), and a community ethos that celebrates the off-the-bike experience as much as the riding.
The course typically runs in a predominantly north or south direction out of Emporia. The north routes are known for rougher, punchier hills; the south routes for smoother but muddier roads through open range.
