Sea Otter is the festival that defines American cycling culture. Started in 1991 at Laguna Seca Raceway as a mountain bike event, it's grown into the largest cycling festival in North America, spanning road, MTB, gravel, gravity, e-bike, and youth racing across a single spring weekend at the raceway. The gravel race is a somewhat recent addition, riding the same wave of growth as the rest of the gravel scene, but it inherited Sea Otter's built-in scale: a massive vendor expo, demo fleets, and a crowd that treats the weekend as much like a festival as a race. The whole cycling world seems to show up for this one, including the entire bike industry.
As the Life Time Grand Prix opener, Sea Otter Gravel carries outsized weight for a race most fans don't picture when they think 'flagship gravel event.' It's a tough course with constant climbing, making it a very good predictor of who shows up to the season fit and ready to fight from day one. The elite field races a 3-lap 90-mile route on Thursday, a full day ahead of the amateur fields, giving the pro race its own spotlight before the festival crowds arrive in force.
The course runs on a closed loop that starts and finishes on the Laguna Seca race track before heading straight out to the Fort Ord National Monument. The 3-lap, ~33-mile format is deliberately built for spectating and easy support — riders pass the start/finish area every lap, and depending on category, do anywhere from one to three laps.
General registration is open on a first-come, first-served basis (no lottery), typically opening in the fall of the prior year. Onsite registration opens the Wednesday of event week at noon and closes at 6 p.m. the day before the event — there is no race-day registration.

The Fuego XL is Sea Otter's marquee endurance MTB event, and was formerly the Life Time Grand Prix season-opener before that role shifted to the gravel race in 2024. Since the LTGP designation moved, the pro field here has thinned slightly, but the race's identity as an official Leadville Trail 100 MTB qualifier keeps drawing a large and motivated amateur contingent chasing their ticket to Leadville.
The course covers Laguna Seca's surrounding trail network rather than gravel roads — technical enough to reward real mountain bike skill, though nothing extreme by MTB marathon standards.
The Fuego XL is the qualifier that matters most competitively: it's an official qualifier for the Life Time Leadville Trail 100 MTB. The Fuego XC runs the next day as one of Sea Otter's longest-standing events, taking riders across sandy climbs and flowy singletrack through Fort Ord's varied terrain. The Fuego Short, for junior racers only, gives younger riders a six-mile taste of the same sandy Fort Ord climbs, starting and finishing at the Sea Otter Classic bridge.
General registration, first-come first-served, through the Sea Otter Classic site.
